According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 596 square miles, 341 square miles: land, 255 square miles:water. It is the fourth-smallest county. Prior to Lucas County’s establishment, it was a vast network of forests, wetlands, and grasslands known as the Great Black Swamp.
Referring to Wikipedia:
“The Great Black Swamp (also known simply as the Black Swamp), was a glacially fed wetland in northwest Ohio and extreme northeast Indiana, United States, that existed from the end of the Wisconsin glaciation until the late 19th century. Comprising extensive swamps and marshes, with some higher, drier ground interspersed, it occupied what was formerly the southwestern part of proglacial Lake Maumee, aholocene precursor to Lake Erie. The area was about 25 miles (40 km) wide (north to south) and 100 miles (160 km) long, covering an estimated 1,500 square miles (4,000 km2).[3] Gradually drained and settled in the second half of the 19th century, it is now highly productive farm land. During the second half of the 20th century, efforts were undertaken to preserve and restore portions of the swamp to its pre-settlement state.”

On February 2015, Johnny Rivera III (34) was struck and killed by an Angela Swartz (43) on the corner of Hill Avenue and Richards Road.
A Serial Murder (1.07 miles)
The Cook Brothers: Nathaniel and Anthony were serial murderers and rapists from 1973-1981. They pled guilty for the murders of nine victims, the youngest only 12 years old.
On Sept. 18, 1981, Anthony Cook attacked Todd Sabo and Leslie Sawicki, who had been drinking in the back of a van parked at an apartment complex in the 4100 block of North Terrace View Drive near Richards Road.
Ms. Sawicki managed to escape while Mr. Sabo fought with Anthony Cook. She found a phone and called her father and then she called the police. The Ottawa Hills police station was 0.2 of a mile from the scene, but they didn't send officers because it was out of their jurisdiction. They referred the call to Toledo police, but Peter Sawicki arrived at the apartment complex first.
Anthony Cook fatally shot Mr. Sawicki in the throat. Mr. Sabo was shot in the neck and shoulder, but survived.
The arrest of Anthony Cook for the murder halted the killing spree.
Eventually the authorities caught Nathaniel Cook. They pled guilty to
charges brought against them and are currently serving life in prison.

The Unsolved Murder of Kenneth Collins (1.8 miles)
May 25, 2013, a Highway Patrol trooper was notified that a vehicle stopped in the roadway.
When the trooper reached the vehicle, on North Reynolds Road between Dorr Street and West Bancroft Streets, he found Kenneth Collins II, 20 years old, unconscious in the driver's seat. He was rushed to the University of Toledo Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
According to the autopsy performed by the Lucas County Coroner's Office, Collins was shot twice, the fatal wound was between his back and upper abdomen.
Twisted Mystery, Death of a Nun and Satanic Ceremony (4.68 miles)
April 2004, Reverend J Robinson, 66 years old, was arrested for the murder of Sister Margaret Ann Pahl. She was strangled to death and then stabbed 33 times in the Mercy Hospital Chapel on Hold Sunday 1980. This was believed to be a part of a Satanic Ceremony.
The arrest was made because of a woman's allegations led to the reopening of the case. She wrote a detailed statement alleging years of sexual, physical, and psychological abuse by Toledo diocesan and religious-order priests during her childhood.
The victim described Satanic ceremonies in which priests placed her in a coffin filled with cockroaches, forced her to ingest what she believed to be a human eyeball, and penetrated her with a snake "to consecrate these orifices to Satan."
She also alleged that the group of clerics killed an infant and a 3-year-old child, performed an abortion on her, and mutilated dogs during the rituals,
The cold-case detectives said that while they could not substantiate any of the woman's allegations, they recognized Father Robinson's name from the 1980 murder case and that led them to re-examine the evidence.
After his arrest another woman wrote in with allegations of the same nature, satanic rituals, sacrifice and murder.
Though DNA test came back that he was most likely not guilty of murdering Sister Margaret Ann Pahl, the Jury still found him guilty. He spent the last 8 years of his life in prison.
