John Gamber’s Addition:

John J. Gamber, III settled in Fulton County in 1846 with a post office address of Fayette, originally called “Four Corners”. At that time he owned Lot Number 1, the residence being researched is Lot Number 10. The cemetery in Fayette, known as Pleasant View, was formed in 1852 from an older section of family burial plots on land owned by John Gamber. THe first burial is speculated to have been as early as 1836. John Gamber was a carpenter, farmer, businessman, real estate entrepreneur, street commissioner at the time Fayette was incorporated, and village treasurer.

The Paul Ford house, said to be the oldest in Fayette, has Justin Cooley’s name as first land owner—filed in 1837. Justin Cooley deeded to Clarissa and Rensselaer S. Humphrey for a $300 consideration in June 1844. Then Rensselaer and Cornelia Humphrey deeded to John J. Gamber. It’s called Gamber’s Addition of Fayette.

Names Associated with the House:

*Unfortunately, due to the home's location and age obtaining a deed to the property was not possible. However, using online resources, a few names were able to be obtained.

Pleasant View Cemetery:

The Pleasant View Cemetery is located west of Maple Street and south of Ontario Street in the southwest section of the village of Fayette. The older section of Pleasant View Cemetery was a family burial ground on land owned by John Gamber. By 1852 the site had been expanded to serve the local area. The first burial is difficult to determine as grave markers were moved to Pleasant View from abandoned cemeteries. The first burial may have been as early as 1836.
