History and Demographics:
Perrysburg is a city in Wood County, Ohio, along the south side of the Maumee River. It was named after Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, naval commander during the War of 1812, who cleared the British from Lake Erie.
Early settlers in the area fled to Huron during the War of 1812. They returned to settle in the floodplain below Fort Meigs, calling the settlement Orleans. They moved to higher ground after being flooded out. Perrysburg was located by a surveying team led by Alexander Bourne, appointed to that position by Edward Tiffin, Surveyor General of the United States. Contrary to numerous Internet postings, Charles Pierre L'Enfant did NOT survey and plat Perrysburg, Ohio on April 27, 1816; this survey was performed in late June / early July, 1816 by surveyors Joseph Wampler and William Brookfield under the auspices of Josiah Meigs, Surveyor General of Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois and Missouri. The city has a total area of 11.51 square miles, all of which is land.
In 1833, Perrysburg contained a courthouse and jail, a school house, two stores, two taverns, two physicians, two lawyers, about 60 houses, and 250 inhabitants.
In 1854, an epidemic of cholera decimated the population. The town closed down for two months in that summer, trying to contain the epidemic at a time when people did not understand how it was transmitted. More than 100 people died. Other towns along the Maumee also suffered high losses from the epidemic, and Providence, Ohio was abandoned. It has suffered a disastrous fire less than a decade before.

Local Cemeteries:
- Saint Rose Cemetery, .695 miles from residence
In 1863 Saint Rose Parish received its first resident pastor, Father Charles Griss. In 1865 Father Griss purchased the current church property that was just across the street from the original church site. In 1867 Saint Rose School opened on this new property. In that same year property was purchased on Indiana Avenue for the parish cemetery.
- Fort Meigs Cemetery, .920 miles from residence
About 1822, the Village of Perrysburg designated their first cemetery at the southwest corner of the Indiana Avenue and Cherry Street. Several epidemics prompted the Village to move the cemetery beyond the edge of the Village to its current location at the northwest corner of Indiana Avenue (River Road/SR 65) and West Boundary (SR 25). In 1847, the cemetery opened as the “New Village Cemetery”. The Perrysburg Township trustees purchased the adjacent property to the north in 1869. The Village blocks were designated by numbers and the Township blocks were designated by letters. Additional land was later purchased at the southwest corner of Indiana Avenue and West Boundary, thus expanding cemetery capacity well into the future. The Village and Township joined their cemeteries as a jointly owned public cemetery on March 31, 1877 and Mayor J.J. Rheinfrank changed the name to Fort Meigs Union Cemetery.
- Hufford Cemetery, 2 miles from residence
Jacob Hufford (Hoffert) purchased the land for the cemetery in 1833. The largest stone in the cemetery is that of the Jacob Hoffert Family. The cemetery has not been used since the late 19th century, but it still is well maintained.
