Robert Lawrence Spearman

January 04, 1928- January 20, 2015

Robert Lawrence Spearman passed away Tuesday, Jan. 20, at his home in Mount Vernon, Ohio.

He was an exceptional father and a devoted husband, a cherished son, trusted big brother, and a kind stranger to a great many he encountered throughout his life of 87 years. He was one to whom marriage, parenthood and friendship were privileges and lifelong commitments, demonstrated by an unwavering devotion to those he held close.

Bob Spearman was born Jan. 4, 1928, in Mount Vernon. His parents were Harry and Lena (Giffin) Spearman, farmers in rural Knox County.

His personal nature, perhaps influenced by his mother’s Scottish heritage, was one of reserved politeness, a strong sense of what is right, empathy for those in need and a delightful sense of humor that revealed itself often to those who knew him well.

A graduate of Centerburg, Ohio, High School, Bob joined the United States Air Force in August 1950. Soon after his arrival at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio for boot camp training, he wrote a letter to his parents, in characteristically selfless fashion, “to make sure you both are doing OK.” Harry and Lena lived to be 82 and 90 years of age, respectively, and their first-born son was there for them throughout their lives. Loyalty and putting others before himself were traits that defined Bob’s life.

In December 1950, at age 22, he married Bernice McCann, 18, of Centerburg, Ohio, and they raised three children together. They made their first home at Great Falls Air Force Base in Montana. Their years in Montana were few but memorable. Bob spoke often of how he had been moved by the solitude and beauty of the West.

They returned to Mount Vernon in the summer of 1954, when his service in the Air Force concluded with an honorable discharge at the rank of staff sergeant. A graduate of the Army Finance School at Ft. Benjamin Harrison, Bob continued his education at The Ohio State University while beginning a 34-year career in accounting and finance at The American National Can Company in Mount Vernon.

His wife Bernice passed away in 1979 at age 47.

Bob possessed a deep but quiet spiritual nature, one that grew not from upbringing or tradition, but from the need to make his life meaningful. He was actively involved in the First Christian Church for many years. His service included that of elder, deacon, financial secretary, and as a Sunday school teacher. He particularly enjoyed ministering to the ill and elderly who could not attend services. This same instinct to seek those who needed comfort led him to volunteer with a local hospice organization after his retirement. Another notable beneficiary of his volunteer work was the American Red Cross; he began donating blood regularly at the age of 18, a practice he continued religiously for decades.

In 1989 he married Jeanne Burger and they made their home together in Mount Vernon for the remainder of his life.

He enjoyed golf, travel, mystery novels, movies of the classic western and science fiction genres, the adventures of Sherlock Holmes in literature and film, vintage radio drama, country music, owls, and solitary walks. He had a deep and natural affection for dogs and an acquired love of cats. He liked to whistle.

In addition to his wife, Jeanne Spearman, he is survived by daughter Pamela Spearman, of Mount Vernon; sons Rodney, and his wife, Anne, of Hillsboro, Ohio; and Mark, and wife, Kira, of Oakland, Calif.; grandchildren Katie (Spearman) Lynch and her husband, Rob, of Ft. Wright, Ky.; Emily Spearman of Cincinnati; Meredith Spearman of Aurora, Ill.; Nathaniel Spearman of East Lansing, Mich.; Hannah Spearman of Chicago; and Beckett Spearman of Oakland, Calif.; great-grandchildren Samuel and Charles Lynch of Ft. Wright, Ky. He also leaves step-daughter Karen Holland and her husband, John, of Mount Vernon; and their children Amy Buttke and her husband, Chris, of Mount Vernon; Kurt Holland of Westerville, Ohio; as well as Jai Keller and her husband, Matt, of Marysville, Ohio; the Holland family great-grandchildren, Trevor and Riley Buttke; and Addie, Tayte and Palmer Keller.

He leaves a sister, Louise Bierly and her husband, William, of Shelby, Ohio; brother Ronald Spearman and wife, Betty, of Mount Vernon; and brother Ralph Spearman and his wife Darlene, of Katy, Texas.

Bob was preceded in death by his wife Bernice (McCann) Spearman in 1979.

A graveside service with military honors provided by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council will take place Monday, Jan. 26, at 11 a.m., at Memorial Gardens, 18260 Coshocton Road, Mount Vernon. The Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home of Mount Vernon is honored to serve the family of Robert Lawrence Spearman.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Knox County Ohio, http://www.hospiceofknox.org.
